General Instructions
Thanks for having interest to write your master thesis with me. You may write either an applied thesis or a theoretical thesis with me. This page provides the information regarding the applied option. An applied thesis applies existing econometric methodologies to solve a practical problem. Given my expertise, the practical problem is most likely related to financial risk management.
The goal of a theoretical thesis is to develop a new statistical methodology (most likely in the field of Extreme Value Theory) which requires solid knowledge in mathematical statistics such as proving asymptotic properties. Click here to get more information on the theoretical option.
The geneneral guidance for writing a master thesis follows the Master Thesis Manual (CANVAS access required). Please make sure that you read the Manual carefully before approaching me. In addition, my personal supervision style follows step-by-stpe approach: one optional pre-step and five mandatory steps. Please click on each step to see detailed instructions.
Step 0 (optional): Making a first contact with me
Please note that this is not a mandatory step. Skipping this step will not affect the chance of finishing a successful thesis. From my side, I neither encourage nor discourage you for making a first contact with me. The only benefit of taking this step is to accelerate the process. However, it may also end the process before it starts: if we do not find a good match through the first contact, I may advise you to go with an alternative supervisor.
Step 1: Describing your research idea
In this step, you will finish the thesis topic request form by yourself. The request may be turned down and you may have to restart the entire process with a different topic or different supervisor.
Step 2: Writing the research proposal
In this step, you will finish the research proposal. The research proposal may fail and you may have to restart the entire process with a different topic or different supervisor.
Step 3: Conducting the research and writing up the first draft
In this step, you will finish the first draft of the thesis.
Step 4: Addressing the comments from the co-reader
In this step, you will finish the final draft of the thesis.
In this step, you will defend your thesis and obtain your final grade of the thesis.
