Addressing the comments from the co-reader

When to start

After receiving the comments from the co-reader

I will help to ensure that the comments arrive in due time. Nevertheless, please count on at least a week between the time your first draft is approved and receiving the feedback from the co-reader.

What to prepare

A final draft of the thesis addressing all comment from the co-reader and me;

A separate document to the co-reader explaining how the comments are addressed.

Guidance for preparation

All comments raised by the co-reader must be addressed. There are three ways to address the comments.

If the co-reader suggested to make some simple extension, or to validate some model assumption, they can be addressed by making new analyses.

If the extension suggested by the co-reader is beyond the reach of the thesis and cannot be realized within short time, then address that issue in the text with a proper discussion.

Address other editorial suggestions from the co-reader.

If you do not agree with the co-reader’s suggestion, you may choose to do nothing on the text. However, you must provide a convincing reply why the suggestion is wrong or irrelevant.

Please note that the last option should be used in a very limited way.

Besides editing the thesis draft, you have to prepare a separate document explaining how you addressed the comments raised by the co-reader, one by one. In the explanation, you should provide a clear guidance to the location in the revised texts (page number, line number, or a table or figure) where you have made changes.

The supervision process

After receiving the comments from the co-reader, make a revision plan on how you would address the points, and send it to me by email or via Sin-Online. I will provide you feedback on the plan.

Then, you may prepare the final draft and the “reply to co-reader”.

If we have finished the first draft carefully in last Step, this Step should have gone smoothly. Therefore, the supervision in this Step will be done usually via email. In exceptional cases, we may arrange another meeting in between.

Once you get my green light to submit the final draft back to the co-reader, you can submit that via Sin-Online. I will then approve your final draft. Then we move to the next Step.

Time line regarding this Step

On average, this step takes two weeks. Please still leave at least three days between submitting your final draft via Sin-Online and the official deadline for submitting the thesis.
