Avro's 1938 Chess Tournament; notebook with newspaper clippings of Tartakower's reports in “De Telegraaf.”
According to many, the Avro Chess Tournament (1938) has been the strongest chess tournament in history. The eight strongest chess players of those days participated, including Aljechin, Botwinnik, and Capablanca. Because of the wars to come, it was the last manifestation of chess for a long time to come. One of the best chess reporters in history, Tartakower, wrote wonderful
page-large daily reports (in Dutch) in the biggest Dutch newspaper, the Telegraaf. They were collected by Johannes Antonius Teunissen (6 June 1905 - 26 March 1991), who gave them to me (Peter Wakker) in 1980. They are provided here. These original documents make this historical event feel like present again.
