September 2017: Together with Gianlorenzo D'Angelo, I chaired the program committee of ATMOS 2017, organized as part of ALGO 2017 in Vienna, Austria. We edited the proceedings of the workshop that can be found here.

June 2017: On June 15, Paul Bouman defended his dissertation "Passengers, Crowding and Complexity: Models and methods for passenger oriented public transport." On the same day, ECOPT organized the workshop "Analytics and Simulation in Public Transport." Participants from academia and public transport operators attended the workshop.

February 2017: On September 7 and 8, 2017, the ATMOS 2017 workshop will take place as part of ALGO 2017 in Vienna, Austria. Together with Gianlorenzo D'Angelo, I am chairing the program committee. We welcome all of you in Vienna!

August 2016: The paper "Application of an Iterative Framework for Real-time Railway Rescheduling," written jointly with Dennis Huisman, Leo Kroon, Luuk Veelenturf and Joris Wagenaar, has been accepted for publication in Computers & Operations Research. In this paper, we describe our results on disruption management that were obtained within the ON-TIME project.

June 2016: The paper "Analysis of FPTASes for the multi-objective shortest path problem," written jointly with Thomas Breugem and Wilco van den Heuvel, has been accepted for publication in Computers & Operations Research. This paper develops an FPTAS for the multi-objective shortest path problem and analyses this FPTAS both theoretically and computationally.

December 2015: The paper "The ON-TIME real-time railway traffic management framework: a proof-of-concept using a scalable standardised data communication architecture" has been published online in Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technology. In this paper, we describe the results obtained within WP4 of the ON-TIME project.

July 2015: The paper "Integrating Timetabling and Crew Scheduling at a Freight Railway Operator," written jointly with Lukas Bach and Dennis Huisman, has been accepted for publication in Transportation Science!

July 2015: Together with several colleagues from RSM, ESE and TU/e, we organised the Conference on Advanced Systems in Public Tranpsort (CASPT) 2015 in Rotterdam. The conference attracted over 200 participants. The program contained more than 130 presentations, a boat trip through the harbor and a conference dinner at the Steamship Rotterdam.

May 2015: The paper "Improving spare parts inventory control at a repair shop," written jointly with Willem van Jaarsveld and Rommert Dekker, has been accepted for publication in Omega!

October 2014: All results for ON-TIME have been collected. I have presented the conclusions of WP5 (on Disruption Management) at the Dutch ON-TIME-meeting at NS and visited the final meeting in Genoa. We are currently finishing two papers that will be submitted to RailTokyo and running additional computational experiments on macroscopic disruption management.

May 2014: As a member of ECOPT, I co-organized the workshop "Analytics and Scheduling in Public Transport" for academics, consultants, and developers in the area of public transport on May 16. The conference hosted speakers from the Technical University of Denmark and several Dutch universities and public transport operators and it attracted over 80 participants.

February 2014: I visited Lukas Bach and his supervisor Sanne Wøhlk at the Aarhus University in Denmark. I presented my research on Delay Management and Lukas and I finished our paper on integrated timetabling, vehicle scheduling and crew scheduling.

December 2013: The paper "An iterative optimization framework for delay management and train scheduling" together with Francesco Corman, Andrea D'Ariano, and Dennis Huisman has been accepted for publication in Flexible Services and Manufacturing.

November 2013: Lukas Bach from the Aarhus University visited the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Together with Dennis Huisman and myself, Lukas worked on integrating timetabling, engine routing and crew scheduling.

September 2013: The paper "Delay Management including Capacities of Stations" together with Dennis Huisman, Leo Kroon, Marie Schmidt, and Anita Schoebel has been accepted for publication in Transportation Science.

January 2013: I successfully defended my Ph.D. Thesis "Delay Management and Dispatching in Railways" on January 10, 2013, at 13:30. My thesis can be found among my publications. After my defense, I was interviewed in Radio Labyrint, a program about science that was broadcasted on Radio 1 on Sunday January 27.

September 2012: The paper "Delay Management including Capacities of Stations" is finished and submitted to Transportation Science. This paper results from my visits to Prof. Schoebel at the Georg-August University in Goettingen and is joint work with Dennis Huisman, Marie Schmidt, and Anita Schoebel.

July 2011: I presented the paper "Fast Heuristics for Delay Management with Passenger Re-Routing" at the IFORS conference in Melbourne, Australia.

June 2011: I visited Anita Schoebel and Marie Schmidt at the Georg-August Universitaet in Goettingen. I presented my research on heuristics for delay management and we worked on an extension for delay management models, that takes the limited capacity of the stations into account. Our paper on this extended model is accepted for presentation at the ATMOS conference.

May 2011: Dr. Huisman and I supervised one case in the bachelor course "Basiswerkcollege". In this second year's course, students apply econometric techniques to real-world problems. We supervised a case on scheduling security personnel on an airport.

March 2011: Our paper "Delay Management with Re-Routing of Passengers" has been accepted for publication in Transportation Science!!

February 2011: Dr. Brinkhuis and I taught the course "Analyse 2" to first-year econometrics students. Dr. Brinkhuis gave the lectures, while I supervised the tutorial classes. This year there were 4 groups of about 40 students.

February 2011: A new paper on "Robust UAV mission planning" can be downloaded from my publications. This paper, written together with Lanah Evers, is submitted to the ORP3 conference in Cadiz, Spain.

January 2011: The annual OR-conference in Lunteren was again a great success. I presented my paper on Delay Management with Re-Routing (again) and spoke to many PhD-students who do research at other Dutch universities!

December 2010: A new paper on the LUCIA algorithm can be found in the publications section. It describes an algorithm that can solve large scale crew scheduling problems. The approach is tested on real-life instances from Netherlands Railways.

October 2010: Our paper "Delay Management with Passenger Re-Routing" made it to the final of the Student Research Paper Contest on Management Science in Railroad Applications. The contest is sponsored by RAS, the Railway Application Section of INFORMS. I will present the paper at the annual INFORMS meeting in Austin (TX), on November 7th.
Update: On October 27th, the RAS newsletter became available. In this newsletter, our paper is announced as the winner of the Student Paper Contest!!
New update: On November 7th, I presented our paper at the INFORMS annual meeting. At the RAS business meeting that took place at the same day, the award was presented. On the picture below, a plaque and cheque is presented to me by Michael Gorman, Chair of RAS. (Kristiaan: Thanks for taking the picture! :-))

September 2010: On October 22nd, ECOPT will organize a workshop Decision Support for Real-Time Public Transport Operations. I will be one of the speakers and created the website for this workshop.

August 2010: The article "Delay Management in Railway Operations" that I wrote for MET (Medium Econometrische Toepassingen), the magazine for the alumni of the Econometric Institute, has been published.

July 2010: I presented the paper "Delay Management with Re-Routing of Passengers" at the Tristan conference in Tromso (June 25th) and at the EURO conference in Lisbon (July 14th). At EURO, a working paper on LUCIA -our algorithm for crew scheduling- was presented by Ricardo Saldanha, who is the head of the Innovation Department of Siscog.

March 2010: As in 2009, I have taught the course "Analysis 2" together with Jan Brinkhuis. It was again my task to supervise the exercise classes.

February 2010: The paper "Delay Management with Passenger Re-Routing: Solving Practical Instances" is accepted for presentation at the Tristan conference in Tromso - Norway, which takes place in June 2010. Furthermore, the corresponding research is accepted for presentation at the EURO conference. EURO takes place in Lisbon - Portugal in July.

August 2009: The paper "Delay Management with Re-Routing of Passengers" is also accepted for presentation in Prato, Italy, on the Conference on Transportation Scheduling and Disruption Handling in September 2009. This will be my first presentation at a conference!

June 2009: From June 7th until June 11th, I have visited Anita Schoebel at the University of Goettingen together with my supervisor Dennis Huisman. Together with her PhD students Michael Schachtebeck and Marie Schmidt, Anita works on Delay Management as well. During our stay, Anita, Marie, Dennis and myself have written a paper that is submitted to the ATMOS conference, which will take place in Denmark in September 2009. Marie will present our work at Atmos. The paper can be found in the publications section.

June 2009: Together with Dennis I taught part of the bachelor course "BasisWerkcollege" for second year students. For the case, the students had to compute the rolling stock requirements to operate the train network in the South of England.

January 2009: I have supervised the exercise classes for the course "Analysis 2", while Jan Brinkhuis gave the lectures for this course. During the exercise classes, I helped 3 groups of about 45 students each with the exercises.
